We returned to Sydney on the 27th and found ourselves drawn to city activities and business matters. Be sure to read about the lap top computer nightmare! We made our way down to the Rocks and the waterfront. Our plan was to head for the city of Parramatta but the site of the Opera House and Harbour Bridge won the day.
We stayed the next several nights at the Mercure Hotel in Parramatta, which was conveniently located right next to a lawn bowling club that had more pokies! These are the Aussie version of slot machines and not poker machines at all. In Australia they are much different from those in the US but a bunch of fun. I still haven't figured them out but I did leave with more $$$ than I went in with.
One evening, we had dinner at the Lone Star Steakhouse. Both Lynn and I love this chain and make a point of having dinner wherever we see one as they are all over America. BUT... in Australia? Yup! Now, let me tell you what a hoot that was! Being from the US and enjoying lots of meals in Texas and loving the Lone Star Steaks, the idea of having Aussie accents all around us and seeing them line dance in true Texas style was a treat! We even tried to teach them to say "Howdy, y'all". We didn't opt for imported beer (Lone Star) but stayed with domestic, Australia's VB; Victoria Bitter. We had a wonderful dinner and such a great time, we returned the following day and did it all again.
Absolutely by accident, while headed north from Sydney, we stumbled on a town called "The Entrance". We wanted to grab something cool to drink and walk around a bit. We noticed the waterfront and some banners that said something about a daily pelican feeding at 3:30 (it was 3:15)! As we looked out over the water, we saw pelicans and more pelicans.
I spoke briefly to a young man, my new friend, Anthony. He is a walking book of knowledge and a really nice guy! He was getting things ready to educate the masses and he did. The food for the pelicans is all from donation. I understand that there are businesses in town that assist in support as well as from the loose coins that guests pitch into the bucket. We found a place to sit and then the show began.
The Entrance is enchanting! Although more common to the locals and those that happen to be in the know, it appears to be a guarded secret. But no more, because I am here to tell you that you really need to see it! This area is wonderful. We learned that this is one of the greatest fishing areas and the water is crystal clear. There are miles and miles of white, sandy beaches and all are immaculate. Near the waterfront are areas designed for little children to play in water fountains and pools and there is lots of seating for parents, grandparents and camera buffs. The Entrance has an assortment of accommodation and eateries, of shops and attractions. Plan several days. We stayed 3 nights and wish we had longer. There is a Visitor Centre at 96 The Entrance Road so stop in and find out all the town has to offer. Ask for Fran or Peter and tell them that Louise told you to! *smile*
